Importance of Violence in Adrienne Richs Of Woman Born :: Adrienne Rich Of Woman Born Essays

The Importance of Violence in Of Woman Born   In societies as various as Sweden and the Yucatan, ladies have a section in the dynamic procedure during their conveyances. The Yucatan maternity specialist accentuates that 'each lady needs to 'buscar la forma,' locate her own particular manner, and that it is the birthing specialist's errand to help with whatever choice is made.' This doesn't imply that births are easy, yet that unnecessary agony is forestalled, birth isn't treated as a 'clinical occasion,' and the lady's individual personality and build are trusted and regarded. (p.175) Rich the two starts and finishes her book on the subject of viciousness to stand out enough to be noticed. When the acknowledgment that something must change has happened, her thoughts are additionally evolved, by suggesting that with some significant change in the man centric framework this savagery may end, and being a mother would not be so troublesome. I concur that it tends to be obviously superior to this dated record of life as a mother, yet as the Yucatan maternity specialists have expressed, there will even now be torment. Rich would concur that lady's individual demeanor and body should be trusted and regarded, however I make it a stride further and believe that this specific conversation on work ought to be an allegory for the contention of this book. The depiction of work and conveyance above is the manner by which parenthood ought to be drawn nearer, subbing the accomplice, spouse, or companion for the job of the birthing specialist. In this circumstance male controlled society doesn't have to fall, a substantially more feasible objective. By both start and consummation with savagery, Rich is saying something that these abominations can be patched or if nothing else ought to be retouched by her proposition of upbraiding male controlled society. Not exclusively may this not be conceivable, yet it suggests that once the level of influence has been moved, this savagery which is examined finally could change. In spite of the fact that the level of influence could move, injurious, vicious, and heartless guardians, fathers or moms, will in any case exist paying little heed to who is holding the force, hence leaving the weight of youngster raising on the other parent, making a similar circumstance that we have today. By Rich putting such accentuation on the brutality, in an underhanded way she gives trust that with her arrangement this viciousness will stop. Since Rich infers an answer for the issue, she, as well, is carrying on a legend of sorts.

Business Analytics Tutorial for Beginners

Business Analytics Tutorial for Beginners © Shutterstock.com | ImageFlowIn this guide, we examine business analytics from 1) comparing business intelligence and business analytics, 2) discussing the benefits and challenges of business analytics, 3)  discussing whether small businesses need business analytics, 4) great analytical tools you can use to gain more business insights, and lastly 5) provide some actionable tips on business analytics.BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE VS BUSINESS ANALYTICSThere are many parts of a business that can benefit from the use of Business Analytics. Sometimes this wide variety makes it hard for business owners to know exactly where to start when they want to apply business analytics.Business analytics can be defined as software or business systems that make it possible for organizations to make decisions after carefully analyzing relevant metrics. These decisions range from customer relationship and workforce management to supply chain and even financial management. This wide range of functions that can benefit from analytics is the reason why some companies are stuck at the first step of applying business analytics. Another problem that is common among businesses is telling the difference between Business Analytics and Business Intelligence. It’s common to find these two terms being used interchangeably in online forums and discussions. Before we look into business analytics, let’s first draw a line between Business Analytics and Business Intelligence.Business IntelligenceBusiness intelligence  is about the technologies, tools and techniques that are used in providing insight about where your business currently stands. It is very broad and the tools and hardware platforms used differ depending on the size of the business and the volume of data to be handled. To better understand Business Intelligence, let’s use an example. Assuming you own a number of fast food outlets in different parts of the country. You normally use Excel spreadsheets for storing the data on sales and ope rations from each of these stores. One day you decide that you would like to use this data to better understand your businesses. Here, you want to know the days of the week that you get more sales, the days of the week that have the most sales, the outlets that sell more on weekends, etc. The solution is in collecting all these spreadsheets and storing them in a central position, then sorting the data and displaying it in an easy to understand form. Some of the visualizations that you can use here include bar graphs, pie charts, etc. They will help you get the information you need faster. The systems that you will use to achieve this fall under Business Intelligence. Simply put, they make it easier for you to know what is happening in your business. Generally speaking, they take data collected from the business and structure it in a manner that is easy to understand so that you can know your business and as a result make better management decisions. Here are some recent business intell igence trends you need to be aware of.[slideshare id=54964951doc=top10bitrends2016final-151110182725-lva1-app6891w=710h=400]Business AnalyticsOnce you have understood what is happening in your business, it’s time to bring in Business Analytics. In Business Analytics, you’ll be trying to find a reason for why things are going the way they are going. The tools used here are complex statistical analysis instruments.Once again, let’s use our example of a chain of fast food outlets. You may have used Business Intelligence tools and found out that more customers frequent a particular shop on weekends, and others on weekdays. Business Analytics looks at all the different factors at play to try and find out why that is the trend.Once you have been able to know why a particular outlet performs badly on certain days and why it performs well on others, you can try and change the things that are within your control that improve the performance. For example, if you find that the performance is better on the day that follows your weekly social media promotion, you can invest more on advertising on the days that the outlet doesn’t perform as well. The performance of this decision will again be monitored using Business Intelligence tools and any necessary changed will be made.Unlike Business Intelligence that uses simple mathematical operations like the sums, products, averages and percentages, Business Analytics uses more complex data science operations. Some of these include correlation analysis, regression analysis, variance and standard deviation among many other advanced techniques. In summary, Business Analytics covers the tools that tell you why something is happening in your business and what is likely to happen in future.BENEFITS OF USING BUSINESS ANALYTICSGoing by the large number of businesses that are looking to add business analytics systems to their operations, it goes without saying that there are benefits that come with it. Let’s take a look at the ben efits that businesses gain from the analytics systems.Smart Decision Making. This is the most obvious benefit that comes with the use of analytics in business. When businesses apply analytics in their decision making, they are able to achieve higher accuracy in the desired outcomes and as a result, the risk and uncertainty that comes with change is significantly lowered. This is a significant improvement of the decision making process that would normally rely on a manager’s gut.Faster Decision Making. In addition to improving the overall quality of decisions made, business analytics help in speeding up the process. For a company to stand out from the competition, it has to respond quickly to changes. It’s also very important to carefully evaluate each decision. Making quick decisions is easy. The tricky part comes in making smart decisions quickly because the decisions needs to be evaluated. Business analytics make this possible because the ready access to data and insights from its analysis make it possible for employees and top management executives to make informed decisions faster.Better Track of Company Values. Every forward minded business has a mission statement that is used to define the core values in the organization. In these companies, all new employees are trained on these values in order to push the company to success. Unfortunately, most of these companies don’t track the adoption of these values in core operations. Business analytics provide a better way of measuring the adoption of these values by translating them into numbers that can be quantified, analyzed and recorded. This makes it easy to notice trends in the adoption of values and missions and at the same time, employees have a better understanding of what customers expect from them.Better Insights through Data Visualization. We have all heard that pictures are worth more than plain words. When it comes to trend analysis, numbers make it possible to present patterns in simple visu alizations like charts and graphs. These visualizations help companies to move quickly. This is because it is possible to find useful and relevant insights without taking a lot of time trying to understand what is happening. Decisions are made faster and processes improve.Companies Stay Updated. The modern consumer is becoming more and more unpredictable by the day. They change their minds very easily and will not hesitate to go to the company that seemingly offers more value. They are very responsive to fads, something that can significantly affect a company’s bottom line. To stay in business, there is a need for companies to ensure that they dynamically adjust in line with the trends that consumers care about. Business analytics ensure that these companies have insights about the way their target market thinks. As a result, it’s possible to come up with a logical explanation for the actions that their consumers take. Armed with this information, it’s easy for a company to ad just its offerings in accordance with the needs and preferences of consumers.Efficiency in Operations. We have mentioned that analytics help speed up the decision making process by providing actionable insights from large amounts of data. This alone is a step towards a more efficient working environment because management officials are able to save time, which will be spent on more productive tasks. Business analytics also encourage teamwork since employees are able to participate in decision making. Employees will also be more productive since they will better understand the overall goals and the strategy and tactics applied in achieving them.More Profitability. Overall, analytics help a company to produce more and better results while using fewer resources. What this means is that the company will be able to achieve higher profits thanks to cost reduction, and better resource utilization. Untapped opportunities are also identified, hence the company is able to expand its reach. By offering new products and services, the company will see increased profits and growth. The result is a competitive edge that can push a company to unprecedented heights.Learn about why data and business analytics are so important  to generate a competitive advantage. CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH ADOPTION OF BUSINESS ANALYTICSEven with the many benefits mentioned above, business analytics also come with a fair share of challenges that companies must overcome before they can fully enjoy the benefits. Let’s take a look at these challenges.Requires Cross-Organizational Collaboration. Unlike other smaller changes in the company operations, adoption of business analytics requires full collaboration from multiple departments within the organization. This will ensure that everyone understands and works towards achieving the organization’s vision and finding the best solutions for the customers’ needs.Complicated Technical Integration. At the time of adopting business analytics solutions , most companies already have existing performance management, transaction recording and operational management systems. Sometimes, integrating business analytics systems to existing systems can be challenging, resulting in errors that could make it look like the company isn’t getting value for money spent.High Initial Cost. Implementing business analytics in business requires expensive software and networking infrastructure to ensure that data is collected and stored appropriately for processing. This can be a challenge for small businesses that have limited IT resources and small budgets for expansion.Lack of Technical Skills. Since business analytics use involves the use of analytics software, there is a need for employees who interact with the system to have technical skills. In companies that are used to doing things the traditional way, most employees don’t possess the necessary skills to achieve the full potential of these analytics systems. In these companies, the analyt ics systems appear too complex for employees. The solution is usually in hiring an expert with analytics skill-set, which also means an additional expense.Information Maturity. Take the example of a farmer. Even with the best and the most expensive farm machinery, without good seeds, the venture will not be successful. In the same way, for business analytics to reap the best results, transactional data should be of a high quality. Some of the problems with information maturity could be unavailable data sources, poorly mastered data or too complex data sources.Got time? Watch a full lecture on business analytics. DO SMALL BUSINESSES NEED BUSINESS ANALYTICS?Small businesses do not have the financial muscle needed to try out large ventures no matter how promising they are. As a result, they tend to carefully analyze and validate the benefits of any major change before investing in it.To find out if small companies need business analytics, let’s identify some of the biggest priorities for these companies and the effect of business analytics on each of these priorities.Efficiency. Since most of the small companies usually have fewer resources than they need, it’s very important that they efficiently use whatever they get. This is the reason why you find employees wearing more than one hat so that they can fully utilize the available time. Business analytics ensures that these companies are able to measure the impact of different actions on revenues and profitability. From the Pareto Principle, 80% of the results come from 20% of the action. Business analytics help in identifying the 20% of the actions that are responsible for the 80% of the results.Growth. Small companies don’t want to stay small forever. Studies have shown that growth is the top priority for more than 70% of small businesses. As a result, growth potential is a big consideration in any decision that will be made in the business. Business analytics provide insights about critical performance a spects of the business like the parts of the company that are posting improvements and those that are not, why there is no improvement in a given area and so on. This means that the company’s management will have the information necessary to enhance growth.Customer Acquisition and Retention. This is a big priority because it has a big impact on the company’s bottomline. As a result, small companies try to acquire and retain as many customers as possible. This means that they will do what it takes to identify the needs of new and existing customers, so that they can design solutions that address these needs in the best possible way. Here, business analytics help in tracking customer behavior so that companies will be able to tell what they like and what they don’t. This means that they will be able to make accurate predictions thanks to the insights from customers’ past actions. It’s also possible to quickly tell how customers feel about a change in the service delivery hen ce the company will be able to make quick adjustments to keep customers happy.Employee Productivity. To achieve efficiency, small companies have to keep their employees highly motivated and productive in their assigned tasks. This will ensure better results, and growth will be inevitable. The use of business analytics ensures that this priority is achieved because employees will have access to information about their performance, hence they will know what they can improve to post better results. They will also have a better understating of the overall standing of the company and the impact of their individual performance on this hence everyone will pull their weight.COMMON MISTAKES MADE IN BUSINESS ANALYTICSAccording to a forecast done by Statistica, it is projected that by the year 2019, companies will be spending over US$ 100 billion annually on business analytics services. This figure is expected to grow gradually from 58.6 billion in 2015.To avoid expensive mistakes, it’s vita l to ensure that you fully understand the business analytics solution that you adopt. Let’s take a look at some of the common mistakes in business analytics.Lacking specific business problems that you are trying to solveMany companies rush into business analytics because it feels like the right thing to do. Others do it because competitors have adopted analytics and they have started reaping some benefits. Unfortunately, these alone should not be the reasons for adoption of business analytics. To avoid this, you need to define a specific problem that you will be solving using business analytics instead of seeking a silver bullet that will fix everything. This will help you in formulation of goals, and also when identifying the software to use.Confusing Causation with CorrelationThis is another common mistakes in interpreting business analytics. You might find that two or more metrics go up or down at the same time. Some of these metrics could be moving at the same rate. The most obv ious conclusion in such a case might be that the two are correlated. However, this is not always the case. You need to analyze the cause of the move in each metric before you jump to any conclusions.Presenting your data using the wrong chartsThere are many ways you can present your data. The choice of the method to use will determine to a great extent the insights that your audience will be able to get from the data. If you are not visualizing your data correctly, it’s very easy to confuse or mislead your audience. An example would be using a pie chart to show progress over time. For this, a bar graph or line graph would do a better job. A pie chart is better for something like telling the number of customers from different geographical locations.Choosing a solution that is not scalableA good business analytics solution should adapt to changes in the company. Regardless of how small or big a company is, one thing that is certain is change.New data sources will crop up and the analy tics solution should be able to work with these new sources. It should also be able to grow with your company’s growth so that you will not need to look for another analytics solution when things go well.Insufficient training of personnelJust like any new way of doing things, there is a need for proper training of employees if you are going to reap maximum benefits of business analytics. After proper training, employees’ performance is improved and as a result, they are able to deliver better results while saving time.OUTSOURCING BUSINESS ANALYTICSOwing to the complicated integration process and the high initial cost, some companies may choose to outsource business analytics to an external firm specialized in analytics. This eases the burden of starting up and the heavy integration and training costs associated with setting up an in-house team.At the same time, the company will be able to become more efficient and competitive thanks to the information that will be availed by the external analytics firm.Should you outsource analytics?Effective adoption of analytics requires the right mindset, toolset, skillset and dataset to get the job done. If you don’t have any of these, and you don’t have the resources to acquire it, then you are better off outsourcing. Luckily, you can still get all the benefits of having business analytics when you outsource.Granted, outsourcing analytics comes with its own fair share of challenges. Some of them include the difficulty of coordinating work across employees in different locations, ensuring accountability of workers and protecting your intellectual property.Nonetheless, it also has its own benefits. To decide if you should outsource, you need to weigh the benefits against the challenges and find out if outsourcing will have a positive impact on your organization.Benefits of Outsourcing AnalyticsYou get an objective and unbiased view from someone who is operating from outside your companyYou get the latest technology and highly trained personnel for a fraction of the costEven if you have limited internal capacity to set up in-house systems, you will still get actionable insightsIt’s possible to easily pull out if you need to redirect resources to a more critical part of your businessChoosing a company to outsource analytics toBefore you pick a specific company, you need to check the following things:Personnel Capabilities. This one is about the people that the company has hired who will be handling your company’s data. The company should have well trained personnel who have a good understanding of modern trends in analytics. You don’t want data aggregators. They should be able to analyze the data and draw relevant insights from it. They should also have signed non-disclosure agreements to protect your intellectual property.Technical Capabilities. Here, you need to be sure that they will not be using obsolete tools to draw conclusions from your data. They should be up to date in their techn ology so that they can give you the best insights. They should also be able to handle all your data sources and the volume of data that you produce.Past Experience. This is where the rubber meets the road. Unless you would like to gamble with your company’s success in business analytics, you should hire a company with a proven track record. They should provide testimonials from existing clients and at the same time prove to you that they will be able to handle your company.TOP BUSINESS ANALYTICS TOOLSThere are plenty of tools that you can use to analyze data. Regardless of the analytics software that you are using, these tools remain standard in most scenarios. Let’s discuss them and their uses in business.Correlation Analysis. This is a statistical technique that will help you to establish whether or not there is a relationship between two different variables. If there is a relationship, it will help you tell how strong the relationship is.Scenario Analysis. This one helps you evaluate possible future outcomes when you take different actions. It is used where a decision has to be made but management is not sure how the decision is going to impact the company in future. It’s also known as total return analysis or horizon analysis.Regression Analysis. This is another statistical tool that is used to find out if a change in one variable will affect another. For example, it can tell if the demand of a product is affected by a change in the price.Sentiment Analysis. This one seeks to get the opinion of a particular group of subjects about a given topic. This is ideal for better understanding how your customers feel about any given subject.Monte Carlo Simulation. Monte Carlo simulation tries to assess the risk and solve problems mathematically by approximating the probability of given outcomes occurring. It uses computer simulations to identify likely occurrences.Linear Programming. Like the name suggests, this one uses a linear mathematical model to come up with the best outcome. It is used to either maximize or minimize conditions to get the best solution. An example would be getting the setup that completes in the minimum time or the one that achieves the maximum profit.Neural Network Analysis. Neural networks work like human brains and they try to process information and identify patterns the way a human would do. It is capable of processing large volumes of data which would normally overwhelm a human brain.[slideshare id=567483doc=dmbi-1219603831018614-9w=710h=400]BUSINESS ANALYTICS TIPSLet’s finish with some tips to ensure success in your business analytics adoption.Familiarize yourself with the outputs from the systems. This will make it easy for you to interpret the results and draw actionable conclusions.Make small actionable steps in your business analytics strategy. Pick several key performance indicators to start with and build from them. Doing everything all at once can overwhelm your employees and negatively affect your results.Start with the most important part of your business. An example would be analyzing sales data first because optimizing the sales process has higher value that is far reaching across the company.Depending on the size of your organization, decide whether you will build a customized data model or if you will buy an out-of-the-box data model made for your industry. Customization may bring some benefits, but it also comes with a bigger price tag.Know your needs at the outset. This will help you start with an end result in mind hence it will be easier to formulate a plan to get you there.Regularly track the performance of the business analytics solution to establish if you are on track towards achieving this goal.

Following the initial surge of interest in Korean television dramas and popular music, nowadays all things made in Korean ? from food, movies and dances to fashion and language ? are quite the rage. The Korean wave is establishing itself as a global phenomenon that has already washed over East Asia and is now reaching the shores of Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Korean Wave in the World The Korea Tourism Organization conducted an online survey of 12,085 non-Korean visitors from 102 countries on its website from May 11th to May 31st, 2012. The questionnaire, which included seven questions related to Korea, had been provided to the interviewees in different languages to see what makes the foreigners interested in the Korean wave. The survey conducted asked the interviewees to select an item of the Korean wave that interested them the most. The results showed a little more than 53 percent of 6,447 respondents picked K-pop. This was followed by TV dramas with 33 percent, films with six percent and others with seven percent. By age group, 49 percent of the respondents were in their twenties, followed by those in their thirties at 18 percent, teenagers at 17 percent and those in their forties at eight percent. The survey showed that, nowadays the Korean wave has been spread not only in Asia but also around entire world: from Asia to Europe, from America to Oceania and it is continuing to spread worldwide, where it is being consumed by an increase in global audiences. More importantly, most of the attracted people are in their 20s and teenagers who are enthusiastically consuming the images and messages offered by the Korean wave. Korean Wave in Vietnam Since the government of Vietnam and South Korea established an official diplomatic relationship, the Vietnamese audiences have more chances to enjoy Korean dramas. Especially, during the final years of 20th century, many Korean television series were introduced in Vietnam through the exchange culture programs or promotional products offered from huge economic Korean groups. These films like â€Å"Yellow Daisy† (1997), â€Å"First Love† (1999), â€Å"Winter Sonata† (2002), â€Å"Jewel in the Palace† (2003), brought a fresh feeling to the Vietnamese audiences and were also the first step of the Korean wave beginning in Vietnam. Moreover, this stage also saw a rapid development of information technology and mass media that made this wave closer to the audiences, especially the youth between 13 and 22 years old who were attracted easily more than other age groups. In the recent years, taking advantage of dramas’ fame, the Korean wave has been expanding to Korean music and fashion that has become an overwhelming cultural tendencies up to now. Three Main Aspects of Korean Wave on Young Generation Korean Dramas During the last five years of 20th century, the Vietnamese dramas became boring because they were influenced strongly by the traditional viewpoints in society. In contrast, at this time, the first appearance of the Korean dramas with romantic love, complication in family relationship help the Vietnamese audiences be more satisfied with their entertainment needs. In addition, with the similarities in culture as well as the development of the mass media, Korean dramas have been accepted easily and have become more popular in Vietnam. From the finding of our survey about the favorite movies, which was researched from 75 young people belonging to the 13-21 year olds in Ho Chi Minh City, the data was described by the pie chart below: [pic] As the chart shows, more than 30% of the interviewees pick Korean drama as their favorite film that also occupies the largest part in the chart. Following that, Chinese drama and European American movies account for 23% and 25% respectively. The two last sectors are Vietnamese drama and the others with the figures being 11% and 10% respectively. From the information above, it can be clearly observed that Korean drama is now dominating major attention of young Vietnamese audiences and it leaves strong influences on their lives. One of the most important reasons making the youth interested in Korean dramas is the beautiful appearance with the familiar formula being the handsome boys and beautiful girls with their perfect make-up. In addition, most of the characters always dress in fashionable clothes with hairstyles that not only attract the young generation to the content of the film but also create the fashion waves in reality. Another side, Korean dramas are generally consistent with the psychology of young people. To be more specific, instead of some love stories with unhappy endings, the recent Korean films such as: â€Å"Boys over flowers†, â€Å"Dream High†, â€Å"You’re Beautiful† focus on the honest emotions of high school students with many funny and interesting details but not less romantic. Finally, an important point of Korean television series is the introduction of Korean culture, especially cuisines. According to Huang â€Å"Kim Chi, one of the traditional Korean foods, has become a [sic] accompaniment of the acceptance of Korean TV dramas† (2009, p. 26). In this way, these films lead young viewers to the content of the films as well as make the curious about them. Korean Music After the significant success of dramas, the Korean wave has continued expanding its influences on the young Vietnamese generation by the appearance of Korean music, also known K-pop a s Shin Hyunjoon (2009) states â€Å"As the danceable rhythm and catchy melody performed by good-looking singers and groups swept across East- and Southeast Asia, Korean pop music has become one of the main components of the so-called Korean Wave† (para. You read "Korean Wave" in category "Essay examples" 2). According to our finding in a survey of 75 young people in Ho Chi Minh City, it can be clearly seen that the interest level in Korean music occupied a minority of the total interviewees. [pic] As regards details, 35% of young respondents picked K-pop as their favorite music. This was followed by European American music with 27%, Vietnamese music with 21%, Japanese music with 11% and others with 6%. The results above shows that K-pop dominates the music market of the Vietnamese youth due to some reason below: Firstly, Korean songs always satisfy the tastes of young audiences with their dynamic melodies. In addition, with the joyful voices and ear-catching rhythms, these songs overcome the barriers of language in order to become closer to young listeners. Secondly, Korean songs also attract young people’s attention to their perfect images. To be more detailed, handsome boys and beautiful girls who have professional dancing skills perform most of the music videos. Besides, these clips are carefully combined with the effects from the colorful lights to create the bright picture. That is also the reason why the song Gangnam Style by PSY becomes famous and creates a new Korean wave up to now. According to the BBC, PSY became the first South Korean artist to hit number one on the UK music charts and his song became the first Korean song to reach No. 1 on YouTube (October 31st ,2012) Finally, an important element contributing to the success of Korean songs is the content or message from the video clip. Actually, these stories affect the Vietnamese music market because they may be so colorful and full of energy or may be so sad with a lot of tears by some love stories which the main actor or actress gets cancer. Take the Single â€Å"Chuyen Nhu Chua Bat Dau† of well-known singer â€Å"My Tam† as an example of this. This song is also a sad story following the Korean style and it touches the hearts of the youth lightly. My Tam is very smart when choosing this song to register with Youtube and she became the first Vietnamese to be an official partner of YouTube (Tuoitrenews, August 2nd, 2012) Korean Fashion Fashion, which affects everybody’s lives by getting them involved in something has become an inevitable part of young people. Gradually, Korean fashion is one of the strongest elements, which affects remarkably to the youth. According to survey about the fashion styles from the poll of the youth, Korean fashion was the most popular style, accounting for 93% of the overall interviewees. It was followed by Vietnamese fashion with 34%. Obviously, overcoming the culture barriers in modern society, the upward trend of Korean fashion has penetrated deeply into the lives of many young Vietnamese. A reality has shown that â€Å"in the streets of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, fashion conscious young Vietnamese have adopted the darker makeup colors, thinly shaved eyebrows, body-hugging clothes, and square-toed shoes of Seoul fashion† (The Russia Journal, Jan. 25th 2002, p. 33). [pic] Besides, the youth seem to  be more fashionable and want to please each other, â€Å"stars of such dramas have become shining idols in those nations and fans there emulate the fashion, hairstyle or makeup of Korean stars† (â€Å"Hyundai heavy industries report on pop culture†, 2004). To clarify, most of young people love the Korean fashion style due to its popularity and current fashion trend. Moreover, another reason that convinces the level of explaining the fashion choices is that the Korean fashion style suits their styles and helps them express their personalities. In addition, Korean fashion has many similarities with Vietnamese fashion with 40% and 28%, respectively. Subsequently, 10% of young people are interested in the Korean fashion style because they want to be like their Korean idols. [pic] The Positive and Negative Influences of Korean Wave Obviously, these analyses above indicate that nowadays, the Korean wave leaves significant impacts on the Vietnamese people in general as well as the young generation in particular including both positive and negative aspects. Positive Influences Through admiring the Korean stars in dramas and music as well as for their fashion styles, Vietnamese youth can not only satisfy their own entertainment needs but also learn beautiful and fashionable dressing styles, smart and educated behaviors from their Korean idols in the films. Another positive effect is a number of Korean stars will be able to ecome shining mirrors for the Vietnamese youth due to their efforts in both entertainment and education. Take Kim Tae Hee, a beautiful actress is famous not only for her professional performance but also her admirable academic achievements, as an illustration of this. She always topped the class with a perfect G. P. A during the period of high school. After graduating, Kim Tae Hee continued her s tudies at Seoul University, the most prestigious University in Korea. Negative Influences The Korean wave has spread rapidly throughout Vietnam without selecting to be suitable for the Vietnamese tradition. This means that through this wave, the majority of young generation gradually forget Vietnamese culture. In recent years, many young couples prefer wearing â€Å"Hanbok†, the Korean traditional dress in their weddings, to â€Å"Ao dai†, the Vietnamese traditional dress, for example. In addition, they also try to memorize the information about their favorite stars rather than the celebrities of our country Another significant drawback that should be noted is that a group of young people have an excessive devotion to their idols, which exceeds the acceptable limits of Vietnamese culture. Moreover, a large number of young people spend too much time and money on dressing up and applying make- up like the Korean style, and hunting for clothes, which are rather similar to their idols. The consequence is the appearance of inappropriate fashion styles and hairstyles everywhere, especially in the big cities. Opportunities from Korean Wave in business The Korean wave brings positive images that become a transporter of other Korean products such as technologies, fashions, cosmetics, tourism and entertainment services. Based on the influences of the Korean wave, Vietnamese enterprises can apply some effective strategies in Vietnam. The first strategy is the collaboration with Korean stars for marketing and development of the products in Vietnam, using Korean idols as models for advertising products, for example Lee Min Ho playing a role in advertising Lotte Pie and Jang Dong Gun modeling for Close Up toothpaste. By holding some events in Vietnam and connecting stars’ images with product concepts, producers can increase the demand and interest of Korean fans, then they can increase the consumption and revenue. The SoundFest Music Festival on April 14th, 2012 was a very successful event sponsored by Samsung and Coca Cola. Instead of buying tickets at a high price to satisfy their passion for seeing Big Bang – a well-known South Korean pop band, fans also had chances to go to the festival free if they won the promotional prize from Samsung and Coca Cola. Korean fans found a code under Coca Cola bottle caps or sent the IMEI number of Samsung phones to get the tickets. Besides increasing the revenue, producers also upgraded their image and value in their market. The second strategy is that companies can take full advantages of this wave to trade on fashion and cosmetic products because the image of Korean actors and singers significantly affected the youth’s consumption tendencies. The local distributors can import Korean fashion and cosmetic products to put up for sale in the Vietnam market. Besides that, they should also consider designing and producing fashion products with the Korean style so that they can match the youth’s taste. The third strategy is to develop tourism packages designed for Korean fans. Tour packages that combine concerts, shopping and sightseeing help tourist not only understand the Korean entertainment industry well, but also can visit the wonderful places and studios in the dramas, such as the snow mountain in Sonata Winter and the palaces in Dae Jang Geum. The reality has shown that Vietravel Company cooperated with Korean Air to make the Korean tour package in August 2012, which combines some special activities on music festival and travelling tour. This is a shinning signal for cooperation between Korea and Vietnam in tourist industry. The forth strategy is designing restaurant and coffee shop with Korean styles. Although the prices at the restaurant are expensive, the youth willingly spend their money on enjoying special Korean food. The youth can find Korean entertainment, such as movies and music discs, posters of famous singers and actors and the lasted fashion magazines, in these coffee shops. This is also a place to exchange cultural things, the Korean fans can share information and open a club for practicing the Korean language. The Korean wave may bring many opportunities to Vietnamese enterprises so that if they can catch the chance and understand the wave well, they can have wise strategies to develop their businesses in the future. Conclusion The result of our survey of 75 young people in Ho Chi Minh City about the influences of the Korean wave on Vietnamese youth proves again that the Korean wave not only spreads around the world but also has a direct impact on Vietnamese youth, especially from three elements: drama, music and fashion. Besides that, we can also find out the concrete psychology and interests of the Vietnamese youth for business strategies. Therefore, the Vietnamese policy makers are able to make reasonable policies to encourage the development of the Vietnamese entertainment industry. This creates the dynamic to propagandize Vietnamese art and culture around the world to bring more profits for the Vietnamese entertainment industry. On the other hand, the Vietnamese entertainment industry can benchmark the Korean wave to reach around the world so that we are able to create a same phenomenon in the near future. Heres much to do with hate, but more with love Essay Example For Students

Heres much to do with hate, but more with love Essay Through a close study of Shakespeares language, analyse how ideas of love and hate are linked in Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare is undoubtedly one of the greatest playwrights and poets the world has ever seen. During his life he wrote around 40 plays, Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous and well-known one. The story is about two families both alike in dignity whose ancient feud has caused many problems in Verona for years, then two members of different families (Romeo and Juliet) fall in love and take their life. This idea of love, where Juliet is treated as a possession, is a perfect example of how times change. Both Juliets mother and her father love her not because of who she is, but more because of what she is worth. Lord and Lady Capulet show this throughout the play, in particular during Act 3 Scene 4, and Act 4 Scene 5 when they find out Juliet is dead. Lady Capulet shows how selfish she really is, saying But one, poor one, one poor and loving child, But one thing to rejoice and solace in. A daughter is merely a possession, reducing love to making a good marriage, ensuring social and financial enhancements. Another element where our two worlds collide is that of family grudges! Television programmes such as neighbours from hell demonstrate this in our modern world. The bitter resentment between the Montagues and the Capulets illustrate this in the sixteenth century. The rancour felt between the two families resulted in the death of both of the children. It also led to many street brawls; a feature with now remains foreign to most modern citizens. Clubs, bills, and partisans! Strike! The weapons used in this time period were somewhat different to those that we now use. However, Shakespeares theme, timelessly modern, is love and its antitheses of hatred, and rancour. Tybalt mainly expresses these feelings, with his negatively destructive attitude towards others. He seemingly loves to hate, and then hates to love. Tybalt appears jeopardized by the happiness felt by other characters. When he sees the love felt between Romeo and Juliet, he vow to turn this intrusion now seeming sweet to bitterest gall. Sadly, to the regrets of others, he succeeds. Many people in our current situation share these beliefs and views. September 11th is a perfect example of where these feelings come into play in our modern world. The nurse expresses a rather more humorous corollary of love. To her, love is really legalised copulation. She may be well meaning, but unfortunately her views on love seem not to extend further than that of sexual activities- Thou wilt fall backwards women grow by men. The nurse appears dithery, voicing her views and opinions differently, depending on which character she faces. I suppose to the audience she could appear very two-faced, yet this is really just her harmless manner. Maybe it is due to her lack of experience, that she cannot feel the depth and strength of true love. Pathetic Fallacy in Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 Scene 1 EssayShakespeares world, in Elizabethan times, varies greatly to our current world, yet in many ways, certain parts of their life can be related to. From a materialistic view, we share no similarities; we dress differently, speak differently, and even fight differently. However, when one looks harder, one realises that, whilst appearances have changed with time, love has become timeless. In its many different corollaries and antitheses, love has passed the test of time, and still lives on.

Lab Report for Atwoods Machine Essay Example

Lab Report for Atwoods Machine Essay Atwood’s Machine Abstract: Ideally, Atwood’s Machine consists of two masses, connected by a massless inelastic string threaded over a frictionless pulley. In this experiment, the dependence of the acceleration on the two masses was investigated. Introduction Atwood’s Machine is represented schematically to the left. Upon inspection, Newton’s Second Law for the system can be derived: For m1: (1) For m2: (2) Solving the (1) for N, followed by substitution into (2), yields the following equation: Rearranging terms and solving for a: (3) By using the photogate and the LoggerPro software, the acceleration of the system may be determined, as well as the dependence on the masses. Procedure A series of masses were placed on either side of the pulley, released from rest and allowed to accelerate a distance of at least 40 cm. The velocity of the system was plotted vs. time, the acceleration determined from the slope of the least-squares line. Initially, the total mass in the system was kept constant, beginning with 200 grams on each side. After each trial, 20 grams from one side was transferred to the other. For the second part of the experiment, the difference between the two masses was kept at a constant 20 grams, adding an equal amount of mass to each side. Apparatus Necessary Equipment: Windows PC, LabPro Interface, Logger Pro software, Vernier Photogate, Super Pulley, mass set, string. Also shown on the chart is the predicted acceleration, calculated from (3); note that they are both proportional, and differ only a constant. Part I| | | Part II| | | a, calc, m/s2| a, exp, m/s2| % Diff| a, calc, m/s2| a, exp, m/s2| % Diff| 0| 0| n/a| 0. 892| 0. 821| 8. 0| 0. 245| 0. 196| 20. 1| 0. 755| 0. 695| 7. 9| 0. 491| 0. 434| 11. 6| 0. 54| 0. 601| 8. 1| 0. 736| 0. 672| 8. 6| 0. 577| 0. 523| 9. 4| 0. 981| 0. 912| 7. 0| 0. 516| 0. 464| 10. 2| For the second part of the experiment, the difference between the two masses was kept constant. As can be seen from the chart to the left, the acceleration is inversely proportional to the total mass of the system, resulting in a hyperbolic curve. This trend was also predicted by equation (3); note, once again, that the calculated acceleration and the experimental value differ by only a constant. Discussion In both sections of the experiment, the curve generated by plotting the aexp against the mass (either the difference or total) differed from the calculated acceleration by a constant value. This value represents the value of gravity at the elevation and latitude of University and any inaccuracies introduced by the ‘massless’ string and ‘frictionless’ pulley. Designing With Feng Shui in Mind

Designing With Feng Shui in Mind Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) is a learned and intuitive art of understanding the energy of elements. The goal of this Chinese philosophy is harmony and balance, which some people have compared with the Western Classical ideals of symmetry and proportion. Feng is wind and shui is water. Danish architect Jà ¸rn Utzon combined these two forces of wind (feng) and water (shui) in his Australian masterpiece, the Sydney Opera House. Seen from this angle,  says Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen, the whole structure has the quality of a craft with full sails: when the energy of the Wind and Water move together in certain directions, this ingenious structure draws that power to itself and to the city that surrounds it. Designers and decorators claim that they can feel the surrounding, universal energy called chi. But architects who incorporate the Eastern philosophy are not guided by intuition alone. The ancient art prescribes lengthy and complex rules that may strike modern homeowners as quirky. For example, your home should not be built at the end of a dead-end road. Round pillars are better than square. Ceilings should be high and well-lit. To further confuse the uninitiated, there are several different ways to practice feng shui: Use a compass or Lo-Pan to establish the most beneficial placement of roomsDraw on information from the Chinese horoscopeExamine the surrounding land forms, streets, streams and buildingsUse high-tech equipment to examine environmental health hazards, such as electromagnetic radiation and toxic materialsUse feng shui principles to help sell your houseUse some variation of a tool called the Ba-Gua an octagonal chart outlining the most favorable placement for roomsManipulate surrounding chi with appropriate colors or objects like a spherical sculpture Yet even the most baffling practices have a basis in common sense. For example, feng shui principles warn that a kitchen door should not face the stove. The reason? A person working at the stove may instinctively want to glance back at the door. This creates a feeling of unease, which can lead to accidents. Feng Shui and Architecture: Feng Shui teaches us how to create healthy harmonious environments, says Stanley Bartlett, who has used the centuries-old art to design homes and businesses. The ideas date back at least 3,000 years, yet a growing number of architects and decorators are integrating feng shui ideas with contemporary building design. For new construction, feng shui can be integrated into the design, but what about remodeling? The solution is the creative placement of objects, colors, and reflective materials. When the Trump International Hotel in New York City was remodeled in 1997, feng shui masters Pun-Yin and her father Tin-Sun installed a giant globe sculpture to divert the roundabout traffic energy from Columbus Circle away from the building. In fact, many architects and developers have enlisted the expertise of feng shui masters to add value to their properties. Everything in nature expresses its own energetic force, says Master Lam Kam Chuen. Recognizing this is essential to creating a living environment in which Yin and Yang are balanced. Despite the numerous complicated rules, feng shui adapts to many architectural styles. Indeed, the clean, uncluttered appearance may be your only clue that a home or office building was designed according to feng shui principles. Think of the shape of your house. If its square, a feng shui master may call it Earth, child of Fire and controller of Water. The shape itself expresses the supportive, secure, and stable quality of Earth, says Lam Kam Chuen. Warm tones of yellow and brown are ideal. Fire Shapes Master Lam Kam Chuen describes the famous triangular design of the Sydney Opera House in Australia as a Fire Shape. The irregular triangles of the Sydney Opera House lick the sky like flames, observes Maser Lam. Master Lam also calls St. Basils Cathedral in Moscow a Fire building, filled with an energy that could be as protective as your mother or as fierce as a mighty enemy. Another Fire structure is The Louvre Pyramid designed by Chinese-born architect I.M. Pei. It is a superb Fire structure, writes Master Lam, drawing down intense energy from the heavens- and making this site a prodigious attraction for visitors. It is perfectly balanced with the Water structure of the Louvre. Fire buildings are generally triangular in shape, like flames, while Water buildings are horizontal, like flowing water. Metal and Wood Shapes The architect shapes space with materials. Feng shui integrates and balances both shapes and materials. Round structures, like geodesic domes, have the energetic quality of Metal moving consistently and safely inward- the ideal design for shelters, according to Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen. Rectangular buildings, like most skyscrapers, express growth, expansiveness, and power typical of Wood. Wood energy expands in all directions. In the vocabulary of feng shui, the word wood refers to the shape of the structure, not the building material. The tall, linear  Washington Monument may be described as a wood structure, with energy moving every which way.   Master Lam offers this assessment of the monument: Its spear-like power emanates in all direction, affecting the Capitol building of the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White house. Like a mighty sword raised in the air, it is a constant, silent presence: those who live and work within its reach will often find themselves subject to internal disturbance and their ability to make decisions blocked. Earth Shapes and the Smudgers The American Southwest is an exciting juxtaposition of historic pueblo architecture and what many people consider tree-hugging modern ideas about ecology. A vibrant, local community of ecothinkers- people whose environmental thoughts direct their behaviors- have been associated with the area for decades. Frank Lloyd Wrights Experiment in Desert Living is perhaps the most famous example. It seems that this region has an unusual number of architects, builders, and designers committed to ecoversity- energy-efficient, earth-friendly, organic, sustainable design. What we call Southwest Desert Design today is known to combine futuristic thinking with a profound respect for ancient Native American concepts- not only building materials, like adobe, but also feng shui-like Native American activities such as smudging being incorporated into everyday life. Bottom Line on Feng Shui: So, if you are stuck in your career or have trouble in your love life, the root of your problems may be in the design of your home and the misguided energy that surrounds you. Professional feng shui design suggestions can only help, say practitioners of this ancient Chinese philosophy. One way to get your life in balance is to get your architecture in balance. Arbitration Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Arbitration Law - Essay Example With the rapid strides made by the world financial and business communities, it has become imperative for businesses to have a proven method of resolving business disputes promptly, expeditiously and constructively. When businesses grow and expand it is natural that disputes will arise. In wake of this, parties often favor a private and informal settlement of disputes, in a businesslike fashion that enable them to further their business interests without strangling their business relationship. It is for such occasions that arbitration is designed—for prompt, pragmatic and efficient resolution of disputes. Arbitration is essentially a process of dispute resolution inspired by ones free will where a neutral third party renders a final and binding decision after the concerned sides have presented their views. This method is particularly useful in international business transactions where parties are often unfamiliar with foreign legal systems. The parties may reside in a number o f different geographic locations, each subject to quite different laws and legal systems. Matters get much more complicated if their transactions involve activities in other jurisdictions, where they otherwise have no presence or familiarity. With stark deviations from a judicial procedure, arbitration is conducted outside the court system by disinterested arbitrators selected by the concerned parties based on the criteria that best suit the nature of the contract.

Human Resource Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Human Resource Management - Research Paper Example According to Armstrong (2008), with the compilation of the tasks to the human resource department, the scope has also enhanced; hiring, training, etc. all have come well under the umbrella of human resource department. One of the most challenging tasks for human resource department today is the fact that workforce within organization comprises of cross-national individuals i.e. people coming from various backgrounds, cultures, countries, etc. This essay is about how the demographics of a workforce are changing or have changed over a period of last decade or so i.e. identifying the trends and how it poses a threat or otherwise, implying to the human resource management. The following section is about the trends occurring and witnessed amongst the demographics of the workforce at a global scale. The attempt of making the world a global village, in accordance with Mathis (2007), has brought about a lot of changes in the global landscape – particularly there has been a rising trend amongst individuals wanting to move away from their home country in an attempt for enhanced earning, improved life style, and increasing the quality of living for their families in their own regions. As a complement to the same, organizations have also initiated the program of cross boundary hiring, with their own reasons to follow. Firstly, as stated by Bateman (2010) having cross boundary hiring is expensive, which is the downturn of the same; however, in the long run, it is cheaper primarily because in third world countries, very talented human resources are very cheap and easily available. Consider the live example whereby employment posts are held mainly by Asians in countries offering bright prospect of jobs such as UK, US and the Middle East; here individuals get good earnings, mainly due to the currency differential, they earn a lot more then they can do in their home town, and

Assessing the decline of the pub industry

Assessing the decline of the pub industry The Leisure Industry is one of the major part of UK economy and has many branches. The key components of UK leisure industry includes pubs, bars, restaurants, cinemas, sport and physical recreation, arts and entertainment, countryside recreation, home based leisure and activity based leisure. Pub industry plays a vital role in community cohesion and social life in Britain and attracts millions of tourists every year. Pubs are frequently remaining few places where communities come together to socialize. Mintel Report states that in 2008 the pub sector experienced some of the toughest trading conditions because of the reasons like smoking ban, licensing laws, credit crunch, changing dining habits and cheap supermarket booze. Despite facing the tough conditions it is still on top of the UK leisure industry holding maximum share. The following report will show changing trends in UK Pub industry along with analyses articles written on Pub industry and showing data taken from Mintel UK lei sure industry review report and then exploring the Pub industry information to possible events to be included within the portfolio. Smoking Ban Since the smoking ban was introduced there has been a marked decline in number of pubs in UK. There was an expectation that smoking ban would become more appealing to a wider consumer base such as women and families. The ban has shown the rise in the food business, however the loss of frustrates smokers has not been matched by the influx of new pub goers. Between 2004 and 2007 all of the four United Kingdom legislatures voted to introduce a ban on smoking in most enclosed public places and workplaces. The bans came after considerable debate centered around the risks of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and especially on the likely impact of a ban on the hospitality industry and particularly Britains pubs. (Paraphrase It and give PUB Visiting Mintel referencing -According to an Office for National Statistics report (2008/09) on visiting pubs since smoking restrictions were introduced, by smoking status; one in four smokers went to the pub more often before the smoking ban, compa red to one in five non-smokers who go more often nowadays. Mintel Pub Visiting Report (2010) shows that while a third of consumers (32%) agree drinking outside the home is more enjoyable since the smoking ban, there are mixed reports as to whether the smoke-free laws have achieved the health benefits expected. A report by NHS Information in September 2009 stated that men over the age of 35 smoke fewer cigarettes than before the ban, but younger men have started smoking more since it was introduced. Positive findings from the report were that a third of smokers now stay at home to smoke instead of going out, resulting in adults being exposed to less second-hand smoke than before the ban. Credit Crunch, Changing Dining Habits, Higher Taxes and Cheap alcohol selling by supermarkets White (2009) states that the UK Pub industry is facing perfect storm and finding it hard to compete with cheap alcohol sold at supermarkets, a trend increasing amid the credit crunch. Mintel Report shows that pub sales declined after the increase in taxes with their new licensing laws done by government and recession which led in increase of alcohol sold at supermarkets resulting in people changing dining habits. In 2007 Pub industry earned 26000 million pounds however in 2009 UK Pub industry earning has been gone down to 24000 million pounds resulting in loss of 2000 million pounds. According to Pratten (2003) the reason for falling trade is the major changes in pattern of leisure. Home entertainment became increasingly popular with an increase in rented videos and television. When combining the greater varieties of take away food and the lower prices of alcohol at the off licenses and supermarkets, a night at home become more attractive to people and the use of licensed retail prem ises fell. Moreover people are more willing to save for foreign holidays. As shown in Figure 2.2, the value of market was showing an increase until 2007; however it dropped by 3.08 percent in 2008 and 4.76 percent in 2009. Muir (2009) states that the changing consumer taste in alcoholic beverages in one of the factor of long term decline. Beer is the mainstay of pub incomes and yet beer consumption has fallen significantly in the last thirty years as show in Figure 2. 3. The Pub Industry is also facing tough competition from alternative leisure pursuits. The relative affluence of the last decade saw a significant rise in the number of people eating out in restaurants and there was a threefold increase in the rate of new restaurant openings between 1992 and 2007. (BBC News Online 2007). According to Mintel Report (2009) there has been a sharp increase in number of live sports event attendees from 2004 to 2009. In Addition, there has also been a significant rise in cinema attendees in recent years, which reached a 38 year high in the summer of 2007(The Independent 2007). According to the figures published in BBPA Statistical handbook 2010, there was a sharp, 6% decline in total alcohol consumption in 2009, making it the fourth annual decline in five years. UK drinkers are now consuming 13% less alcohol than in 2004. UK consumption remains below the average for the EU The UK Pub licensees are also facing rising cost. Increased materials and utilities prices have been passed on by the brewers in the higher wholesale price of beer. A shortage of malting barley and rising demand for bio-fuels has seen barley prices increase faster than inflation. Packaging costs have also been driven up by rising energy prices (BBPA 2008b). Licensees have seen their own operating costs increase. For example licensees have had to spend increasing amounts on entertainment to stay competitive. A recent survey by the ALMR found that their members third largest cost was entertainment. The 2003 Licensing Act abolished the two in a bar rule which had meant that no licence was r equired for putting on two live performers. In addition many pubs rely on live football to bring people through the door and Sky television fees have continued to increase. These are calculated on the rateable value of the pub and this can be disproportionately expensive for small pubs in higher rated rural areas.(APPBG 2008). Why Pubs matter The UK Pubs act as hubs for the development of social network between local people. As per data shown in figure 3.1 by CAMRA Omnibus survey (January 2009) 36 percent of the people said that pubs were important for get together compared with local cafes and restaurants showing 20 percent and 15 percent for local shops. According to APPBG (2008) the pub industry amounts to 2 percent of national GDP and community pubs provide 350,000 full or part time jobs. Mintel (2010) latest report on Pub visiting shows that 34 pubs were closed per week which were drink led and 5 pubs were closed which were food-led between July to December 2009. According to CGA, the pub closure rate has slowed to 29 per week for the first six months of 2010. At it worse, the pub closure rate was 52 pubs per week.( Morning Advertiser 2010). In addition, government has unveiled measures to protect british pubs which include 3.3 million pounds to be spent on business support to make pubs more successful and to help communities buy into struggling premises to keep them open. Pubs will be allowed to extend into ventures including restaurants, gift shops and book shops without planning permission. (BBC News) In addition to this benefit, pubs add a great deal to UK economy and hold a highest share in UK leisure industry. As per data shown in graph below, Pub industry holds 35 % share of total leisure industry by earning 24000 million pounds in 2009 According to news published in Guardian the government would be consulting on the introduction of banning low cost alcohol sales. Report suggested that supermarkets will be banned from selling wine, beer and spirits below a national minimum price. Conclusion The UK Pub industry is more than retail business which act as a local institution for encouraging people to mix with others from different background. In recent years the pub industry has been hit hard with thousands of pubs closed due to recession, smoking ban, high rents. But in any downturn there are opportunities which are investing in an independent or managed Pub located in central place offering good variety of food and drinks along with warm and friendly environment. While the pubs remain biased towards men, pub needs to sell wine and ciders to attract women market. In addition, the steps taken by government to save pubs are a good option to invest in pub industry.

Beer Industry Marketing Analysis Essay

The Beer makes up most of the alcoholic beverage industry, with a 74% volume in 2002 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). The production of beer around the world has increased from 36. 85 billions gallons in 2000 to 38. 78 billion gallons in 2003 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). Beer production has been a part of society close to the beginning of civilization. A Mesopotamian tablet dating back to 7000 B. C. contains a beer recipe named ?  §wine of the grain (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). In 1292, a Czech Republic town produced its first pilsner beer. A prominent beer brand, Pilsner Urquell, brewing dates back to the early thirteenth century. Beer is produced with a mixture of mashed barley, malt, and rice or corn. U. S. brewers use filtration systems as well as add additives to stabilize the foam and allow long lasting freshness. Bottled or canned beer is almost always pasteurized in the container in prevent the yeast from further fermentation. After 1996, the U. S. beer industry had consistent growth with about 3,500 brands on the market in 2002 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). The U. S. exported beer to almost one hundred countries worldwide. The beer industry peaked production with 6. 2 billion gallons in 2003 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). The U. S. beer industry haws over 300 breweries. However, this industry is dominated by three companies: Anheuser Bush (45% of the industry), Miller Brewing (23% of the industry), and Adolph Coors (10% of the industry) (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). MARKETS BASIC PRODUCT/SERVICE OFFERINGS There are several different types of commercial beer, consisting of pilsner, lager, ale, stout, light, low-carb, malt liquor, dry, ice-brewed, bottled, draft, and non-alcoholic. Further, the U. S.market has been divided in to three categories: super premium, premium, and popular-priced (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). In 2002, the U. S. Market Share Reporter stated that light beer consumed 40. 1% of the beer market, premium held 25. 9% of the market, and popular-priced beer held the remainder. Here is a brief description of the most popular types of commercial beers: ?  «Lager: a high carbonated beer, containing a low alcohol content, with a pale, medium-hop flavor ?  «Stout: a thick, dark beer, almost like syrup ? «Porter: a sweet, malty flavored brew with a farley high alcohol content ?  «Malt Liquor: a mostly malt based containing high amounts of fermentable sugars ?  «Light: a reduced calorie brew made by decreasing the grain amount used when brewing or by adding enzymes to break down the starch content in the beer (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). One small segment of the beer industry is the micro brews. This segment as well as brewpubs had a double-digit increase in the U. S. throughout the early 1990?  ¦s (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). However, this increase started to decline toward the end of the 1990?  ¦s. This was mostly due to overexpansion. This did not stop all the microbreweries from continuing to open in the U. S. which allowed this market to show considerable growth. In 2002, the U. S. reportedly had 396 microbreweries, 46 regional specialty breweries, and 994 brewpubs (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). III. MARKET STRUCTURE AND ATTRACTIVENESS Market Structure The three major players in the brewing industry, Anheuser-Bush, Miller, and Coors Co. , have started increasing their market shares at the expense of smaller national brewers. The alcoholic beverage industry has gone through a consolidation period since the consumption rate has declined over the past few years (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). One of the markets that have flattened in this industry is the domestic beer market. This industry has hit a mature stage where consumption rates have flattened. This caused price increases to help suffering companies increase its profit margins (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). This along with increased vertical integration and inherent production economies makes it very difficult for a inefficient major industry player to compete nationally. The market that is dominating the brewing industry is the micro brewers. This group has found a niche market in the beer industry and has steadily driven the market share upwards. These companies normally target the smaller market segments and do not try to compete with the large industry brands. To achieve such successful profit margins, the micro brewers have the production process under contract with a regional brewer (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). Attractiveness The attractiveness of the beer industry is steadily growing. However, it is not growing in to area of large domestic brewers. This area of the beer industry has hit a flat consumption growth. The area that is become more attractive is the micro brews. From 1999 to 2002, the micro brew market grew almost 11 percent in the U. S. (Future of †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Specialty Beer, 2004). This has caused the major companies in this industry to break into this niche market by combining forces with smaller companies or penetrating the market with a new micro brew product line. This niche market remains attractive to any investors due to the fact that the micro brew consumers will not react negatively to higher prices or price increases (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). The other area in the beer industry that continues to flourish is the international beer market. From 1999 to 2003, the market share for imports grew from 9. 1% to 11. 9%, respectively (Future of †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Specialty Beer, 2004). Not only does the increase in market share hinder the domestic brewing companies, but the average case for imported beer is $24. 27 and for domestic beer is $16. 47 (Beer Report, 2003). This shows that imports sales are much higher due to increase in market share. As well, from a revenue stand point the international market has a higher attractiveness over the domestic market. From this, U. S. beer firms have penetrated into the international market by joining with international brewing companies to become American distributors for their brands. The continuing growth of U. S. beer firms penetrating international beer markets are due to the continuance of licensing agreements, direct exports, and foreign investments (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). IV. Porter?  ¦s Five Forces Model A good way to look at the beer industry is by using the Porter?  ¦s Five Forces Model. This analysis will help analyze the attractiveness of the industry as well as discuss the ease of entry and exit. Threat of Substitutes: Substitutes for this market include wine and distilled spirits. The wine industry consists of grape wine, sparkling wines, brandy, and fermented dinks (Alcoholic Beverages, 2000). Most distilled spirits are based on name brand products including vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, and liquors and cordials. Both of these markets have a major capability of expanding due to international exports. Another substitute for the domestic beer market is the higher priced brewed beverages including micro brews or imports. Though these products do carry a much higher price, the customers willing to pay higher prices are capable of using a substitute. Threat of New Entry: The threat of new entry in this market is relatively low. The legal costs and economics of scale in the manufacturing and distribution areas of the beer market are strongly weighed to successfully compete (Overview of the U. S. Beer Industry, 2005). This prohibits most potential entrants. Buyer Power: Since there are many different competitors and substitutes in the alcoholic beverage industry, the buying power is in the hands of the buyer. The only approach to sway the consumers buying behavior is through advertising and marketing. Supply Power: Some breweries in the U. S. hold no supply power. All the company is responsible for is brewing the beer. On the other hand, the large domestic beers, for instance Coors Brewing Co. , have a manufacturing plant where it controls of the manufacturing process with it products. Companies who have this capability hold huge amounts of supply power. This sometimes eliminates manufacturing costs from another company. Intra-Industry Rivalry: Competitive rivalry remains strong amongst the three leading companies in the beer industry, Anheuser-Bush, Miller, and Coors. These three companies battle against each other through advertising and market share. The micro brews in the beers industry also compete against each other to hold a competitive advantage over other products at that level. This area of the beer industry competes as well using advertising, packaging, and market share. Political Variables/Trends There are quite a few political variables to consider in the beer industry. The first issue in this industry is the implementation of taxation on alcohol sales. Governments around the world strong believe in taxation on alcohol to both increase revenue and decrease consumption (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). This trend has been effective since the consumers continue to purchase the products no matter how high the prices. The U. S. has had the lowest tax rates on its alcohol sales compared to other countries. In 1991, the tax rate on beer doubled to $18 per barrel, equally 16 to 32 cents per six pack (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). This was a sharp increase from its previous tax rates. The next political view most companies have had to deal with in the alcoholic beverage industry is the issue of alcohol abuse. Many companies have to monitor how it markets its products to now allow the persuasion of binge drinking or excessive drinking. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimates costs of $140 billion per year relate to alcohol abuse (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). Drunk driving has been another issue that beer companies have come under attack in relation to beer sales. The government has pasted several laws in the past to stricken the drink and driving laws. The U. S. Senate passed a law to decrease to legal blood-alcohol level from . 10 percent to . 08 percent. As well, a bill was passed regulating the legality of having open containers in a moving vehicle. This was passed in the Senate making it illegal to have any open containers in a moving vehicle. Marketing to minors was another issue that several beer companies got slammed with in 2004. Lawsuits were filed stating that some of the marketing tactics in the beer companies commercial were intention targeting underage drinkers (Lawsuits, 2004). The courts argued that the material used in the commercial ads were young video games and models ?  §chosen to appeal to underage consumers (Lawsuits, 2004). Some of the brewing firms decided to implement underage drinking warnings in its ads to cover itself from any future litigation Economic Variables/Trends The economic trend in the large domestic beer market has pretty much flatten entering in the maturity stage in the product life cycle. This will mean that sales will mostly stay consistent with little increase. Unless the major companies can try to dominate the niche markets in the beer industry, they will need to use advertising and marketing to drive sales. The fear of consumers switching to a substitute product like the micro brews could be present. Thus, branching out into that niche market would help the companies to gain higher market share and increase sales. Social Variables/Trends The major social trend in the beer industry is the ?  §low carb craze (MacArthur, 2004). Americans have entered into a low-carb phase. Beer sales decrease a good amount following the introduction of this phase into the American food markets. Anheuser-Busch had a heading start when this phase started since it was the first to implement a low-carb beer, Michelob Ultra, into the alcoholic beverage industry. This sparked a spin off with other major companies and soon mostly all major players in the industry had developed a low-carb beverage (MacArthur, 2004). Anheuser-Busch, Coors Brewing, and Miller were putting together a $300 million media campaign supporting any brands that help avoid a beer belly (MacArthur, 2004). In 2003, Bud Light still led the market with an increase from 2. 6% to 8. 1% while Coors Light volume decreased from 0. 6% to 8. 5% of the market share (MacArthur, 2004). Technological Variables/Trends Technology in this industry is mainly computer based focused. Companies use computer software and equipment to allow for efficient production of the products being manufactured. Also, increase in technology variables could mean better advertising strategies due to the technology created. On top of being used to speed up the production and efficiency of service, new technology also has been used to pull well-defined reports that become useful with inventory and point-of-sale purchases.
